I'm looking for a cheap car to do a road trip in this summer. I'm looking to spend 5,000 or less but I can go up to 7,000. any ideas for a good cheap car that's going to be reliable for long distances. If you have some suggestions on where to stop along the way. We are trying to make it all the way to Seattle from south Florida and hit all of the baseball parks in between.

Right now I have 2004 passat tdi which is great from mpg but horrible when it comes to the reliability of the electronics. So I'm not sure what exactly would be the best bet for me. Also any gear suggestions would be helpful.

It's going to be 3 of us hopefully so the caris going to need to have room for 3 people plus duffel bags for clothes.

Don't forget that you need to do baseline maintenance on the vehicle you purchase just to make sure you won't be broken down along the way in a new vehicle. Also the AAA super premium golplatinum membership is something you should have for the journey. . . .

You could go for a Focus ZX-3, but that drivers seat isn't super comfortable for 8 hour days behind the wheel. There is always the bullet proof Panthers. . . Then you could go for one of those silly Freestyle wagon things. I dunno, Astrovan?

I'm biased, but try to make room for an A's game. A bleacher seat can be had for under $20(they aren't actually bleachers, just outfield seats,) which leaves more money for beer. A's bleacher fans are diehards and very friendly. Also, you're allowed to wander around the whole outfield section and meet everyone.

Dodge Charger? They get ok gas mileage, and aren't terribly uncomfortable.

You can get the early models for around 5k now with 130k miles. If rental companies use them, I would think they are somewhat reliable.

We are actually trying to go to all 30 parks. That is if Canada lets us in.
